One of the benefits I’ve found with home schooling is that science is sometimes left up to me to determine the topic of my day (rarely, but on occasion). Today I decided I wanted to study the stars, the galaxy outside our universe and my source was an unusual but effective video that just happens to be popular among others my age (read: Mom hates it).

So, off I went on my own to study the Galaxy via “The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy”. Amid the dirty looks from mom’s side of the desk when she heard some of the bad jokes coming from my speakers, I learned quite a lot. For instance: I learned in the first five minutes that the writer of the show is a genius, although, he’s at least a little big crazy. What that has to do with the stars in the sky and the universe, I don’t know, but I’ll figure out an answer of some sort before I have to write my report on the topic, I’m sure.

A friend mentioned that I probably wasn’t doing REAL school, when I chose my topics. That same friend told me later about watching a fun video in class, one the teacher picked. At least as a home schooler – I get to pick my videos – as long as mom approves.

So, what kinds of fun things do you do while you’re learning?

I was helping out Cleve Tidwell today. What I thought was an honor is that he entrusted me with his keys to get stuff out of his car, and his camera to take pictures. I felt it to be a real honor. Cleve Tidwell is running for US Senator from Colorado. He’s a conservative kind of guy with principles and great values. I appreciate his moral standard and the fact that he’s dedicated to serving this country.

(Hey – my mom wrote this – but my twitter ID is kentonv – tweet, tweet.)

First Tweets – 140 Characters to Twitter Bliss

Conversations with those who aren’t interested in the blog-o-sphere, twitter, tweets and peeps may not be interested in why we twitters, tweet our peeps. But, if you’re interested, here’s the scoop.

What the heck is twitter?

The voice on the phone was familiar; my 23 year old daughter had gotten a text message from my son. “Hey sis, get twitter and tweet me. I can tweet you back.”

And why in the world would I tweet my brother?

Suddenly 140 characters on the cell phone sounded dirty. I was gagging on laughter. I knew I didn’t dare. From 204 miles away, she’d smack me upside the head with her flip-flop.

“Twitter is the latest social network, it’s like facebook on steroids and myspace ain’t got a chance.” I answered her, stifling a giggle.

Mom, do you have any idea what “tweeting my brother” sounds like?

She’s still boiling over, and telling me, I was talking to my boss via text when I got that text from him. I couldn’t imagine what the boss was talking about, and my mind was going straight to no mans’ land with the future implications of “tweet me”.

It’s like an instant micro-blog post where he can promote his book, tell peeps about his website, and share the details of his writer day.

Mom, did you just say peeps?

She was giggling into the phone, and I heard her friend ask her what was so funny. She told him that her mom was nearly fifty and she just said peeps on the phone. She was laughing so hard he didn’t understand. She told him again. I said, it isn’t THAT funny.

She said to me that if I could only hear myself talk, I’d think it was pretty funny too. Then I hear her friend start laughing and both of them are talking about his mom and how he’d never catch her tweeting on twitter.

I got the last laugh when I sent my next tweet to one of my favorite peeps. 140 sweet characters later @hismom knew he thought she was too old to tweet too.

We old birds of twitter must tweet together.

You can be one of my peeps too, at http://twitter.com/janverhoeff and you’ll get to hear all the great ways that twitter helps to advertize your business, promote your website, and create active interest in the most normal and mundain kinds of days. Even if you’re a boring old almost 50’s mom, you can tweet some interesting twitter to your peeps and be the coolest granny on twitter.

My name is Kenton Verhoeff and I live in Lamar, Colorado. I am seriously thinking about running for mayor, because I believe I have an ability to understand those things that are wrong, and a responsibility to help refocus the direction of my community, my state and my government for the future.

I like Nelva Heath, who is the current Mayor of Lamar, Colorado. She’s a nice lady. I just believe that if I want to make a difference, I need to speak up and be heard.

I believe the people of this community deserve leaders who understand the position of servant-ship. As a leader, elected official, in Lamar, I believe my duty would be to serve the people of this community. As a servant of the people, my responsibility would be first to LISTEN to the people of the community and act upon their advice and direction.

When the people speak, government officials and particularly city officials should be listening to what the people say. It is the responsibility of elected officials to uphold the constitution and maintain the sovereignty and power of the people of this nation, beginning with the community. As land owners and citizens of this community, we are granted certain unalienable rights, the right to speak freely as to our beliefs, including but not limited to our faith and religious distinctions. We have the right to keep and bear arms (as per the Second Amendment, if you’ve forgotten). We have the responsibility to care for and maintain our own land in the manner WE deem fit.

I believe the people who are elected as leaders in this community should be more than drinking buddies with an opinion, they should be servants of the people, more concerned with how the people want things done, what the people can afford, and how the people choose to live than how the leaders choose FOR the people to live. I believe it’s more important to remove the drug lords and drug dealers from the streets than it is to arrest grandma’s for driving down the street, or stopping to pick up grandchildren on the wrong side of uninhabited streets. I believe it is more important for the police officers to be where they’re needed, like downtown directing a traffic jam, than to be patrolling empty streets where nothing is going on.

I believe the mayor should be more available to the people, accessible and listening to what people say. Like for instance, those poor people who have to live under the bright lights of progress on North First Street. Has anybody asked them how inconvenient it is to live in 24 hour daylight? What about the noise levels? Are we going to be replacing their hearing with some other format of comprehension… Since the community is destroying it?

I believe the people of the community should be helping each other instead of looking for government aid. I don’t believe Big Bully Uncle Sam should be striking it rich on our tax dollars while our communities have no resources to help their own people.

I believe we should be buying from people who live and work in our community – instead of bringing in big business to take over and destroy the businesses that exist here. Perhaps, if the city is going to help businesses, why not help the smaller businesses and encourage people to help each other more?

I’m not a politician. I’m just a kid who believes he can make a difference, now, before I get too big for my britches and over dominating like other government officials. I believe change should be made with an understanding of what brings us to change, rather than just because we can. I believe change should include freedom, liberty and justice, true justice where what was wrong got fixed and what was right got praised and encouraged.

Yes, this will take capitol to accomplish. If there’s enough interest, I’ll be taking donations for campaign funds, shortly. Leave a message if you want to support my campaign for Mayor of Lamar, Colorado.optical amplifier

Occasionally, I learn a new something online. Yesterday I learned about twitter. I’m trying to figure out how to have a twitter account and I plan to have one very soon, but… Mom said I have to learn to write whatever I want to say in 140 characters.

That’s like eating birdfood. Count your pecks. You can only have 140 seeds. I want more.

Marketing online is like that. I get just one hair brained idea and tell it to Mom and she says, “Try it!”

She’ll teach me, tell me how, and set me loose. But, I want more. Guess I’ll be twittering a lot in the near future. I want to know how to twitter.

If you get a hankerin’ (I like that word.) to follow me on twitter – just click on Kenton on Twitter.

Tweet! Tweet!

Are you sore from your last Wii session? I’d bet you’re playing too long with no breaks or not drinking enough water. Down those bottles, it’s important to stay hydrated while playing a Wii. You need a break now and then. Drinking plenty of water will make you take a break.

“From doing chores in the kitchen (Mom makes me cook dinner or wash dishes occasionally to remind me that it’s part of life), to writing my book Unikra and editing with ACE Writers, my life somehow seems fairly normal. At least I think it’s like any other 13 year old.” Says Kenton Verhoeff, Colorado’s 13 year old Kid Blogger.

Wait, that’s me! Carl Ocab is the Kid blogger, where did they get the idea that I was Kid Blogger? He probably makes a heck of a lot more money than I do online, because he’s doing it to make money. But… I’d enjoy the money if I was making more of it too. My objective is mostly to support my camp and skiing habits.

But, being a profitable online blogger would be okay with me. I like making money online.

Trouble is, I post things like the contest and get busy with life and forget to go check things out and finish the project. So, now… When I’d really rather be skiing than editing and formatting, here I sit editing and formatting.

But – I do like marketing.

In fact just a few days ago I was sharing with Mom how I liked marketing and I think I’m really good at it, because I focus on the people and making friends. So, Kid Blogger, move over, there’s another 13 year old Kid Blogger from Colorado that’s got your back side (when you get too old to be a Kid, I’ll still be here).

Happenings!
